Solstice Canvas
Solstice Canvas is an ongoing artwork series created for Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery part of SOLSTICE: Reflections on Winter Light. Two annual artworks have been crafted for the facade since 2021 offering moments of reflection and poetry interrelated to Mount Auburn Cemetery, nature, the winter solstice moment, and contemplation. Artworks to date can be viewed below.
COSMIC BREATH
Cosmic Breath extends a gentle invitation to connect with the vastness of the cosmos during the winter solstice, creating space for reflection and mindful breathing with the rhythms of a celestial landscape. The illuminated facade reveals its own star, which expands across the cosmos before returning back home to Bigelow Chapel — reminding us how both distant and close we are to the spirit of the universe.

Sweet Sweet Auburn
Nature has a poetic rhythm and offers us joy and tranquility through its complex design and many cycles. Mount Auburn, as a garden and arboretum, beautifully embodies this rhythm, from the towering trees shedding leaves in autumn to the vibrant floral blooms of spring. This artwork draws on that essence, incorporating local species of trees and plants to evoke metaphors for light, growth, and death.

AETHER
Aether is an audiovisual installation exploring the interplay of light and shadow, tracing their movement across the architecture before converging in harmony within the rose window. A gesture towards the darkest days of the year during the winter solstice when the need for light, metaphorically or literally, is a prominent aspect of nature and emotional landscape.

Microcosm uses the unique architecture of the facade to conduct a poem to the stars. The work is a gentle and transformative gesture as it brings one intimately closer to the stars and allows one to be carried through the building transformation itself.

Binate
Binate explores embodying Bigelow Chapel as a spire & conductor of light and darkness, a chamber and instrument that both draws light from within it and emits it outward. While light is the main medium in concept & visual language, we must respect and acknowledge that light is only possible because of darkness. This piece is intended to hold that duality. Through visual poetic gestures within the architecture and the original sound composition of LEYA, this piece is aimed to express duality for guests to be able to find their own moment within that binate spectrum.

2-Flowered expresses poetic metaphors of nature through seasonal changes and contrast of light and shadow. The motifs are embedded into the architecture of the facade, weaving through and impressed into the animation work. The textures you see and hear evoke sensations of both the natural and celestial worlds inviting one’s reflection to both be grounded in nature and marked into one’s greater atmosphere of life.
